Thanks to those who responded to my question.

Phil: "The text Mike quotes is not 'the first sentence of Scripture' but the
first sentence of the Gospel of John.  Clearly, though, it is meant to
put into mind Genesis 1:1."

Touché, but of course, being raised Catholic, we weren't allowed to read the 
Bible.  I was going by hear-say.

 So, could one translate John to read:  "Before the beginning there was 
intelligence.  And that intelligence is that which is and which has never not 
been, and it is that which we call God.  God is the infinite intelligence that 
created and sustains all else that is.  As the moon to the sun, it is given to 
us to share in that intelligence dimly."  

My translation makes a lot more sense to me.  I realize that John was 
attempting to bestow God-credentials on Jesus, which my translation ignores, 
but then I am much more Gnostic than John was.  And probably closer to the 
truth.  How about them apples?
