In response to some "unsympathetic" criticism by Mackie, Popper however
retracted from the form originally given, declaring the original form
invalid, and going so far as to suggest that since Mackie's excellent argument
"had not [...] attracted much notice outside the Popper circle, it might seem
that a quiet burial, perhaps in the form of a brief note of retraction, is
all that is called for.">
I don't quite know what JLS is talking about here, e.g. what was "retracted"
and what was the "form originally given". Does anyone else?

Popper further explains this in terms of the difference between logical
and material implication which he claimed to have introduced into British
philosophy but which distinction JL Mackie failed to observe when he made a
similar "self-contradictory" criticism in his review of Popper's Schilpp
volumes.
For the record, it was a review essay by Mackie in the BJPS.

The reference to the Popper Circle is an obvious parody on the Vienna
Circle. In this connection, it should be pointed out that J. L. Austin's Play
Group was called the Austin Square, since such was the shape of the table at
St. John's where, as H. P. G. recalls, "we felt like successful
businessmen. Austin adored that room."
