Phil: However, I am perplexed as to why 'the-piece-that-starts-at-this-position' would be
problematic as a name.

Eric: Maybe we should discuss metonymic naming here, where the hyphenated form becomes a conceptual or cognitive organization expressed by a linguistic formulation.

"Pawn" would therefore be:

one-of-eight-pieces-that-start-on-the-second-rank-
of-the-board-for-each-player-and-has-the-option-of-moving-two-
squares-or-one-square-forward-on-the-first-move-and-captures-on-
either-forward-diagonal-squares-except-in-en-passant-capture-when-
a-player-moves-his-pawn-two-squares-from-the-second-row-to-the-
fourth-row-and-there-is-a-pawn-of-the-opponent-that-can-capture-at the-squares-that-are-passed-by-the-pawn-and-is-also-the-piece-
that-can-promote-to-a-queen-rook-bishop-or-knight-when-it-reaches-
the-eighth-rank-without-having-been-captured.
