I cannot see how you can KNOW that the commander KNOWS. Surely 'knows' is a
metaphysical concept that shouldn't be used in the army (or the navy, for
that matter -- not sure about the royal air force, because, to use Geary's
term and description, "they are all a bit sissy")
He knows it in the same way that Mark Twain knew that Huck Finn and Jim
went down a river on a raft.
