I highly recommend Jim Carroll's book Basketball Diaries. It's bleak and
disturbing, but contains some searing, eye-widening writing. You'll hear
"People Who Died" (one of my favorites, too) with different ears after reading
it, Donal.

I guess it wasn’t too soon to ask him what he wants carved on his tomb. RIP,
Jim.

With Times obit. link given in comments.

Came to my attention almost 30 years ago with his song "People Who Died" from
his "Catholic Boy" album.
