John writes: This is really incredibly dumb--a board game general's view of strategy unencumbered by concern with global economic and diplomatic, not to mention humanitarian, issues. Saudi Arabia is to Islam what the Vatican is to Catholicism, Utah is to Mormons, and Israel is to Jews. One of the original neocon purposes in going after Iraq was to get US forces out of Saudi Arabia, where their presence is a constant casus belli to Muslims all over the world. _____ So we can agree that the idea of abandoning Iraq to its own devices and retreating to a nearby stronghold is a bad idea? That's at least a positive step toward creating constructive notions of how to deal with Iraq. Maybe the next question is force size and deployment. Should the US institute a draft and increase force size to somewhere between one and two million soldiers? Or should force size remain the same? And should forces be deployed differently?
