McCreery is looking for illiterate foundational myths which are  
_word_-related.
 
How about Parmenides's poem. In Antiquity it had the status of a myth, and  
it's all about the primacy of the Logos, which was incidentally, the word used  
to translate the Gospel ("Verbum" in the Vulgate). Talking of which, it 
wouldn't  hurt to trace the root of 'verbum' in the online Short/Lewis.
