Da voi lontan in sconosciuta terra

Ursula@xxxxxxxxxx writes:
According to Mark Twain, "Wagner's music is really much better than it
sounds."
But, never the twain met, I imagine...

Well, I cannot say. I'm new to Wagner, sort of.

I still have to study "In fernen land". I cannot see how Placido Domingo,
who was born in Mexico, has the cheek to sing it in German! I wonder how his
sounds sound to a German (Austrian) native speaker. He thinks he can sing
fluently in four languages!

---- I am still studying the modulations. You see, I have the six CDs of the
tenor repertoire (sort of a karaoke thing, but more professional), and this
one is included -- ("Cantolopera" collection). The modulations are exquisite.
I never listened to the actual _sung_ track as it bores me.

I have started the study of the prosody by noting that in Italian, they made
an effort for rhyme.

The data bank on "Con che soavita" was mainly taken from Rosenthal, and he
quotes a letter from Wagner, "Dear Mr. Costa, No I have no intention of having
my operas sung in Italian in London".

Anyway, fashion prevailed.

LOHENGRIN
Premiered in Italian at Royal Italian Opera House, Covent Garden, May 8,
1875.
rec. Pertile, 1927.
Libretto by Arrigo Boito, Music by R. Wagner
The cast at Covent Garden
Henry The Fowler ......Seideman
Lohengrin (tenor).......Nicolini
Elsa .........................Albani
Friedrich von Telramund ......Maurel
Ortrud (female)....................Capponi
Four Nobles ...............Rossi, Manfredi, Fallar, Raguer
Four Pages .........Parry, Pocchini, Estele, Portaluppi, Ferrari, Vianello,
Abraham, Mardini
Conductor : Auguste Vianesi After the premiere, Lohengrin was regarded as
one of the most interesting musical events of the season.

Wagner died in Venezia, as he should.

Mind, Ritchie must be right about the 'edge off the world'. There is a very
_proud_ "Asociacion Wagneriana" in Buenos Aires! (but then, many emigres,
too).

Did not get what you meant by the initials when you said you went to
Chicago. Sorry.

Cheers,

JL
