An excellent writing exercise is to try to describe, in simple, clear language, an object -- for example, a paper clip -- as though to someone who had no knowledge of paper clips. It always involves other knowledge; if you assume the reader would know what "thin metal" is, then you don't have to explain metal; if you assume they know what a 180-degree arc is, then you don't have to explain degrees in a circle.
