In a 1998 essay Timothy Murray suggests that

"Cryptation feeds on 'antimetaphor' and thus thwarts interpretation:
'Incorporation entails the phantasmatic destruction of the act itself by
which metaphor is possible: the act of putting into words the original oral
void, the act of introjecting.'"

The example he provides is from Montaigne. Refraining from uttering the
explicate of un-life, the Romans, Montaigne claimed, would say "he hath
lived." Periphrasis was described by Puttenham as "the Figure of ambage,
[of] darkness or obscurity."

Today cryptation escapes the OED3. However, given the above, does it's
meaning still sufficiently deviate from the more commong "encryption" to
allow it a position in the vocabulary of a gentleperson?
