It may be that 'kitch' is of Latin American origin, but the word JL has in mind is, as the subject header implies, 'Kitsch,' which is, as far as I can tell, echt Deutsch. (Richard will soon set me straight about this.) My German source says that 'Kitsch' can be translated as 'brummagem,' a word that I believe JL has dilated on before.
