I don't have dogs, so I can't really speak to this, but I do have two cats that were foisted on me by a well-meaning friend and I can tell you for a fact that cats understand everything you say to them. If you don't believe me, just look at a cat's face when you talk to it. There's no doubt that they understand every word. Unfortunately they also ignore everything you say, perhaps because they understand so well.
