Thanks, Eric, you're very kind by not enumerating my foibles. : )

Now I'm off to the laundromat -- even on my birthday -- can you believe that? Is there no justice in this world?

We've assembled in virtual lit-ideas space today to honor Mike Geary on his birthday, and to acknowledge the splendid efforts Mike has made not only as poet but also as spokesman for human freedom. Granted that is more than Mike has ever done for any of us, but now we have a chance to make him feel very, very guilty.

Mike was born 135 years ago on the moon, under adverse circumstances. From such humble beginnings, he has risen to be a significant force in the cultural and artistic life of Memphis. If anything, this shows the role that chance plays in human affairs.

Mike has done a lot of good for everyone here. Because of that we can overlook certain of his foibles, which decorum forbids me to detail at length. Nevertheless, here are a few:

• He's obsessed with dust, bulls, seedy bars, and women he hasn't met. Plus he includes them in his poems.
• Mike is compassionate, generous, and kind; unfortunately never at the same time.
• This deeply-sensitive, cultured man always offers kind words of advice to help aspiring writers perfect their craft. Regrettably this advice almost always involves purchasing a Remington portable typewriter and traveling overseas.
• Never one to dwell on the minutiae of constructions, he always goes to the heart of any work of art. For Mike, this often involves ampersands.

As I said before, in lieu of the excellence of Mike's heart and mind, we easily overlook these foibles, much as one disregards the cracks in one of Vermeer's paintings, the slips in a Cortot recording of Chopin, much as I hope Mike disregards my cracks and slips. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
