Hmm -- Sophisticated Rebels. He wrote the book in 1988 and as Hughes says in his intro, "My own initial reaction was to fear that Sophisticated Rebels had been overtaken by events less than a year from its date of publication. My second was to recognize that the book had been heading in the right direction." He goes on to describe the senses in which his book is heading in the right direction. However, he would certainly have written a different book had he written it in 1989. So after I read his paperback introduction (written in 1989 after the fall) I set the book aside and forgot about it. Perhaps I'll give it another shot. Consciousness and Society "almost" put Hughes in that category for me but I was turned off by what I read in Wikipedia. Even so I decided to try one more of his books. Prompted by your question, I sent today for "Sophisticated Rebels." The reviews are good. David Ritchie, Portland, Oregon
