There's also: "This is to replace Dr Maria Lasonen-Aarnio, who is leaving her Fitzjames Fellowship at Merton College to take up a position as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan." Mind: I love Wedgewood. But I think that's confiential stuff. What about: "This is to replace G. P. Baker, who died" --- Baker was philosophy tutor at St. John's. He got the post after Grice left: "This is to replace Grice who Americanised his-self". --- Baker recalls that he was reluctanty accepted at Oxford: He did not have Greek! --- Etc. "This is to replace my mother". "This is to replace". We have become discarded and discardable items. Surely a Mertonian is not JUST to replace Maria, who, for all the truth may be, may have gotten bored to tears about logic, etc. Fitzwilliam Michigan =/= Merton, etc. Oddly, Grice belonged to Merton from March 1938 to April 1940. He was the first Harmonsworth Research Fellow, along with Steve Watson, the historian of George III, and brother of his (Grice's) future (and only) wife, etc. ---- JLS
