Beaverton schools are experimenting with a grading system, with a hip and groovy title, "proficiency grading," that clearly should be more widely adopted. What's to like about it? There are only two grades and they sound about the same: HP and NP. HP stands for "highly proficient." NP stands for "nearly proficient." Nobody's actually "proficient."
