One personal anecdote -
My likely one and only visit to Athens included a visit to the Museum of
Antiquities. Fantastic.
One fairly small room was lined with statues of goddesses. All larger than
human life-size. All looking directly at me as I sat on the bench in the
midst of them. That's what intimidating feels like.
