Evidence of not only 'abnormally high' surface temperatures but also 'significant damage' to northern polar regions due to overheating being impossible to ignore, an in-depth study was recently undertaken to determine the cause and suggest possible remedial action.

Upon disassembly of the globe, it was discovered that the previous owner had ignored the 'MAX 25 WATT' proscription prominently inscribed on the internal electrical fittings and had foolishly installed a 40 watt bulb.

Installation of a cooler, more energy-efficient bulb was indicated. This prescribed remedial action was undertaken and the globe was re- assembled.

Subsequent monitoring of the polar regions has shown that temperatures have returned to 'acceptable' levels, and that, although some evidence of deformation and discolouration caused by what can only be termed as 'abusive' behaviour by the previous owner remains, damage that could have resulted in structural failure and subsequent total disfunction has been avoided by right-minded action carried out in the nick of time.

If only ...

Chris Bruce,
admiring the colourful internally-lit globe
(rescued from a neighbour's garbage heap)
that now splendiferously graces his window-sill,
particularly on this, a chilly rainy grey morning, in
Kiel, Germany

P.S. This little bit of frivolity is lovingly dedicated to little Maya, born to Eric and Jacki on Earth Day (April 22), 2010.
