I see on the BBC website that there's a (free!) water taxi from Manhattan to the new Ikea store in Brooklyn.

Would it be realistic (and recommended) to consider walking from there to the world-renowned Botanical Garden

and Brooklyn Museum

in/near Prospect Park?

wondering whether this could be
the straw that tips the balance
in musings about a trip to NYC
(last visited September 1979), in
Kiel, Germany

PS: I say that I've visited NYC, but I've actually never been off the Island Manhattan ("smoke on your pipe and put that in") in my three visits.

PPS: I'm serious. My first trip to Germany was precipitated by viewing a picture of a spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) in a display cabinet at the Meeresmuseum in Stralsund

http://www.meeresmuseum.de/english/content/index.htm

(unfortunately no picture of the monster there, but you can see and read about it at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_spider_crab )

and saying 'I'd go to to Germany to see that!' (Luckily I contacted the museum in advance, and was informed that at that time the monster was not on display as recent research had necessitated a new paint job [not their exact words], but that a private visit in the workshop could be arranged.)

This in turn precipitated my first trip to Copenhagen - and thus Tivoli Gardens

the Botanisk Have & Museum

 Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

and the *exceptional* Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

was precipitated by arranging with a friend (since I haven't checked with him, I'll keep *that* website private), whose sabbatical in Sweden coincided with that trip to Germany, 'to meet somewhere in the middle for coffee'.
