JL,
A wonderful French film based on FFJ’s character, called “Marguerite,” came
out in 2015. I haven’t seen the Streep version yet, but “Marguerite” is an
affecting gem. I heard actual recordings by FFJ on the radio ages ago in
Austin, Tx. (One of the KUT deejays was a fan.) The cult expands!

Went to see this and came away with a souvenir “fan” which is a piece of light
cardboard glued to the same piece of wood we used to get with an ice cream tub
at the cinema. Maybe they had lots left over when everyone moved to plastic
spoons? The big surprise in the movie was not either of the lead performances,
which were good, Hugh Grant adding depth that has previously been little in
evidence. No, the surprise was David Haig cast as Florence’s voice teacher.
Most famous as Detective Inspector Derek Grim, in Rowan Atkinson’s, “The Thin
Blue Line," the man who said, “You seem to forget, Kray, it’s my arse on the
line—so you’d better pull your finger out,” and who was always going on about
artsy fartsy, namby pamby, wishy washy people, Hart played a stupid English
detective well, but would he manage an American accent? Er, no. Good comic
chops though. Simon Helberg is great. I haven’t seen “Big Bang Theory,” but
he’s definitely got the stuff.

Pretty much nails it. Funny, but not immersive.
