I had asked Eric Yost how he would determine 'solid content' (Eric's words) without, at some point, doing a headcount. In response, Eric points out cases where mere headcount doesn't determine truth or quality. Of course, this isn't a response to my question since it doesn't get us anywhere close to determining what 'solid content' might be. I will try again. --- So will I. Phil posited that the number of fundamentalists somehow meant that the viewpoint had respectability as a result of sheer numbers. I replied that "popularity is one thing, solid content another." Phil then asked, "How do you suppose one determines 'solid content' without, at some point, doing a headcount?" My response--that it depended upon WHO was counted as well as WHEN they were counted--was unsatisfactory to Phil. However it does seem to answer the question...at least as it was intended in the context of our exchange. If Phil then wishes to go off on a tangent, that's fine too. If most people prefer Danielle Steele to James Joyce does that mean Danielle Steele is a better writer than James Joyce? ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change your Lit-Ideas settings (subscribe/unsub, vacation on/off, digest on/off), visit www.andreas.com/faq-lit-ideas.html
