I had written: "And the business of government in this matter [i.e. arranged marriages] is what?" to which Eric Yost replied: "To protect the individual from oppression by family, culture, tradition? Isn't it comparable to mandatory clitorectomy?" If a goal of government is to protect individuals from physical harm, there are laws for that. Why bring in 'oppression by family, culture, tradition'? I shudder at the thought of politicians deciding what is or is not an acceptable form of family, culture and tradition.
