Me too. All that from the pre-WWI photo!_"Time"_ spans the entire civil rights struggle from before Marian Anderson's recital at the Lincoln Memorial to the present. It took me over half a year to start it (ugh! not another oppressed minority novel!) but it turned out to be a masterpiece.
Staunch Canadians might like Powers' _The Goldbug Variations_, which, although centered on a genetics investigation, has the subtheme (and narrative structure) of Glenn Gould's two recordings of the Goldberg Variations. (Goldbug = Poe, of course.)
