Lawrence, your summary of Torchwood is wrong.   You say

"The world is in the process of rounding up these children when Captain
Jack Harkness finds a way to destroy the aliens.  In the process he
destroys his own grandson.  One life sacrificed for the salvation of
millions of children is considered by Jack worth it.  But later when
his side-kick Ianto is killed, the bisexual Jack Harkness admits he
would change his mind if he could.  He would let the children be taken
rather than lose Ianto."

Ianto died on Day 4, before the question of saving the Earth by sacrificing
the child arose (on Day 5).

(Children of Earth as a portrayal or example of a disintegration of values? I'd
say not.)
