A switch is a slender branch of a tree with all the leaves stripped
off. It is cut off the tree so that it is in the neighborhood of a
meter long. It might be in the neighborhood of 1.2 to 1.4 centimeters
at the base where the hand holds it. It tapers at the end to something
like 1/2 of a centimeter. When used on a child's bare legs it stings
quite a lot. As opposed to the Biblical rod, a switch is flexible --
more like a short whip.

Directions 11-09-14
Even when I look inside,
Or especially when I do,
There are no clear directions.
I skitter off fleeing
Toward locations I
Suspect aren’t really there.
Oh I knew it would be chancy
Back in those days;
I was quick and clever:
“Who here has a good
Sense of direction,” I would
Ask, and some private
Not too shy would volunteer.
Susan was also very good,
But her liver now
Won’t keep toxins
From her blood and she
Is like me, lacking
A knowledge of where
We need to go
And how to get there.
