i remember at a certain age in arithmetic
being surprised by mr beckwith's nostrils
which from my low vantage were giant caves thick with hairs
also possibly monsters

now i think the strangest thing about clipping toenails
is realizing they'll outlive me
that after i'm gone they'll keep on going
taking their last quiet bit of battery

we all know that the continuing issue in commercial flying
is believing you and the bags will emerge
from that metal tube possibly together
in space though often not in time

the short sum is that life has many promising carousels
a good deal of cut and thrust
and little witnessed failures of pluck
