A modest proposal.

The real difference in 2009 will be in the various Secretaries and their underlings and staff who go in with the new President.

They are the actual new government. Those hidden people. They do the governing. Those appointments waiting to surprise us. Those wizards or fools.

Why not require that candidates expose their new teams prior to the general election? Perhaps subject these teams to competency and decision-making tests of some kind? Have them debate as well?

Think of the way Bush's team influenced the course of the past eight years.

Yet we are hypnotized into reducing everything to personality cult. This one person. Obama. McCain. This candidate's scandalous beliefs about guns or abortions or some other topic outside the scope of executive government ... a sideshow. The true edge is in the governing team. So show them.
