The New York Times wanted to run an editorial about Iran.

This wasn't an editorial but an Op-Ed piece by Flynt Leverett, a former senior director for Middle East affairs at the NSC, and Hillary Mann, a former Foreign Service officer who participated in the 2001-2003 talks between the US and Iran. The piece was headed 'What We Wanted to Tell You About Iran.'

Leverett and Mann say that the blacked out sections contained information that is already in the public domain and provide a list of citations to demonstrate this.
