The one time I helped Erin prepare her remarks, she got thrown out of
class as soon as she made them.
When I entered graduate school at Cornell, longer ago that I care to
remember, a couple of weeks after classes had started, I met with my
'special committee,' of Norman Malcolm, Frank Sibley, and David Sachs,
all of happy memory. At one point, Malcolm, who was a notoriously
difficult person, said to me, 'You ought to speak more, in class.' Sachs
leaned over and said, 'And I'll be there holding a basket for your head
to fall into if you do.'
