IMHO, there is essentially no *psychological* difference between Calley "following orders" and a member of the Jon Stewart Tribe hating all members of the Glenn Beck Tribe and vice versa. Pseudo-kinship creating pseudo-speciation.

My favorite variation on the Milgram experiment involves group reaction to individual rebellion. If the variation of Milgram is performed socially, and *one* person refuses to follow orders from the authority figure in presence of the other subjects, it creates a mass defection from the authority figure's commands.

In another variation, if the orders are given by telephone, the subject is less likely to carry them out ... maybe it could be called the "Is Paris Burning?" phenomena.
