Lawrence: We are a conflicted people - all of us are.  We engage in 
conflicts throughout life.  The nations that represent us also engage in 
conflicts.


Conflicts make a better story, that's for sure. So maybe there's a 
narratological base for our conflicts? If consciousness is a narrative, 
maybe we need conflict to make sense of our lives? Similarly with 
nations: lacking conflict, they would vanish and nobody would notice 
their absence.

PS: What's bad for the hero of the story is good for the plot. That may 
be the original fatal apple in concentrate form.
