McEvoy's implicature. Someone had written, abruptly:
i. "Perhaps it should remind McEvoy of Popper."
-- to which McEvoy retorts:
"Everything reminds me of Popper. Or so they say."
There are various sub-implicatures here. The main one is:
ii. The use of 'perhaps' in (i) is otiose.
But is it false?
A secondary sub-implicature is in the disjunctive utterance following
"Everything reminds me of Popper."
iii. Who is 'they'?
The sub-implicature being that McEvoy _is_, in set-theoretical parlance, a
member of the class "they."
The important thing about McEvoy's implicature is that it is, in Griceian
parlance, 'non-detachable.'
