I think Mr. Wright was Englishing the well-known Latin adage, "Ars longa, 
vita brevis" (Cicero, Epist. vii, ad 8) -- which is all back to M. Geary's 
remarks on Michelangelo's _Davide_, I suppose.

Which art is the _longest_?
