We might all want to be liked

Many years ago, a friend of mine wrote to Roland Barthes, telling him
how disgusted she was with his approach to literary judgment.

After a while, he replied. His letter began, "I write so that I can be
loved from afar, but in your case I see that I have failed."

This jarred and humbled my friend who went back to Barthes, and
eventually his writing won her over. She was composing a second letter
to him to let him know he had succeeded when she got the news that he
had been run over.

So I guess if we're going to be loved from afar, people had better get
on with it, stop mucking about and wasting time.

Eric
