It sounds like a perfect Onion story. But it's in Slate, Washington Post, etc.

He was (past tense already) a major figure in the Bush policies. When he resigned, he floated the rumor that he had resigned in protest over Army chaplains being forced to give non-denominational sermons. Wow. What a man of principle! But even that was a lie. He resigned because the police was waiting for him to get out of the White House so they could arrest him.
