Could you translate or transcribe or deconstruct these poetic expressions into
propositional form so that all rationally autonomous persons could assess them
for validity and soundness? Otherwise, whatever truth and rightness this poetry
possesses remains the specific ownership of the poetically competent. Neither
rational autonomy nor the requirements of a multiculturally pluralist democracy
can rest content with the latter state of affairs. (Is it really true that
poets are closet philosophers who lack the courage to state their views in a
form open to assessment by public reason? And was Plato right about poets?)
