Julie,

Call the local TV station and have them bring their cameras. Be sure to tell them name and location of owner.
Also go to city hall and see if he is up to date on property taxes.

Veronica

Julie,

As I wrote earlier, you have a righteous beef. Easy for me to say, but if you can get a line on a new place by tomorrow, call the Fire Marshall, as well as the housing authorities. This place wouldn't pass building a codes inspection in Bangladesh. Take some pictures of the outlets pulled from the wall, the exposed wires, etc. (Try to get the front page of a newspaper showing the date into the picture.) Direct action beats legislation, but the law's on your side.

Robert

ps/I have this friend in Memphis, who...
Having had my house sold out from under me several months ago, I took a rental place. As it turns out, there is no functioning shower, the windows are painted shut, electric outlets in the front room don't work except a couple which are pulled out from the wall, bare wires showing; toilet works about 1/2 the time, there are no screens on the back & front doors, no smoke detector, etc. I apologize if I asked this already to this list. It only, perhaps, indicates my desperation. Naturally, I signed a lease, because I was, again, desperate for a place to live. Do I have any recourse?? Is this all just something to be accepted de rigeur?
