I think the implicatures are different. Or rather, each expression triggers 
 its own:
 
i. "It's been a while since ..." implicates that you keep a count on your  
whiles: cfr.
 
----- it's been two whiles since.
 
ii. "It's been awhile since" carries no such implicature but one to the  
effect that you prefer to avoid a blank space between 'a' and 'while'.
