It turned out to  be sensory data that was triggered by 
odorous substances reaching the  sensory epithelium, 
activating receptor cell axons that are part of the  
olfactory nerve. These nerves perforate the cribriform plate 
into the  brain cavity and conclude in the olfactory bulb, 
which sent their axons in  the olfactory tract to the 
piriform cortex, the periamygdaloid area, and  the olfactory 
tubercle -- all bearing neuronal markers of "that  smell."

The Bush Administration stands by this story, though many in  
the media see this as sign of a coverup ...
