It was great seeing most of you at the ESEB meeting and learning about all
the projects that I missed during the last years. It's really great to see
that our community is thriving as strongly as before, and that there is a
new generation of brilliant scientists that I didn't know about.
As I've mentioned to most of you (some are learning now), I am moving my
research group to the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart in
November. Yay! I am looking for a motivated post doc to join our group and
develop their own research program (see evoldir announcement below). I
think that this is an exciting opportunity because we already have lots of
exciting data for cline analyses and for differential expression in the
grasshopper hybrid zone in the Pyrenees. Also, the Stuttgart museum has a
huge collection and thus offers the ideal grounds for research programs in
biogeography, speciation, landscape genomes, and invasion biology research.
Yet, after these three years of isolation, I am out of touch with who has
recently finished (or is finishing) their PhDs and who is looking for a

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop a
research program in the SMNS, in the field of Evolutionary Genomics. The
researcher is expected to focus on natural hybridization to understand
genetic barriers between taxa at several stages of divergence. He/she/they
can build upon existing projects and will develop an independent research
program connecting taxa from different systematic groups of animals
represented at the museum. The position is available immediately until
September 2026.
Understanding which genes and geographic barriers promote speciation
dynamics has been a long-standing goal in evolutionary biology. In order to
understand with genes facilitate diversification, we study taxa that
hybridize in natural hybrid zones while maintaining genetic boundaries in
loci that underlie reproductive barriers. In one project led by Dr. Ricardo
Pereira, the postdoc will analyze existing genomic and transcriptomic data
from natural and experimental hybrids of grasshoppers to understand which
genes underlie hybrid male sterility. The postdoc is expected to develop a
second multi-taxa project using the museum collection (hybrid zones of,
e.g., Sulawesi tarsiers, Malagasy fodies, European wall lizards,
sticklebacks and freshwater mussels) to understand the genes and
biogeographic barriers that shape diversification across taxa. A fixed
funding of 5,000 Euro per year is available, additionally to any
independent funding that the applicant is expected to raise for
his/her/their independent research program. The postdoc is encouraged, but
not required, to mentor bachelor, master or PhD students, for example from
the University of Hohenheim.
The State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart (SMNS) is one of the
largest natural history museums in Germany and sees itself as a
future-oriented research and educational institution. With the support of
the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, an
extensive expansion of the focus on biodiversity and evolution research
will take place in the coming years. The SMNS mission is to contribute to
solving current and future challenges such as the biodiversity crisis.
Furthermore, together with the University of Hohenheim, we form the
Competence Center Biodiversity and Integrative Taxonomy (KomBioTa).

Requirements:
• PhD degree in Evolutionary Biology or related fields
• Experience with genomic data (production and analyses)
• Experience with one computational language (R, Python, or others)
• Very good command of written and spoken English
• Strong publication record
