Dear theoretical- and conservation-minded friends!
Attached is an unusual job opportunity that may be of interest to colleagues
and students in your networks. Please feel free to share widely.
Whoever fills the position is likely to be someone I will interact with quite a
bit, so I am hopeful that person will be both excellent and passionate about
making a difference with their computational, biological, and collaborative
skills.
Best to all, hope you are doing well –

External Email - Exercise Caution
Greetings conservation colleagues,
The Species Conservation Toolkit Initiative – a partnership to envision,
develop, and support software tools for species conservation and population
management – has an opening for a Computational Biologist. The position will
initially be focused on working with a team of colleagues to build the
PMxceptional software for genetic and demographic management of threatened
species maintained in botanical collections, and will also help lead the future
development of the Vortex PVA software, the Outbreak epidemiological model, and
other software packages. This is a post-doctoral level position that requires
both expertise in conservation biology and experience with software
programming. The position is hosted by and will likely be based at the Chicago
Zoological Society (in Brookfield, Illinois, USA). Review of applications will
begin soon, and the position will remain open until it is filled. A brief
summary of the position opening is below, and the job description is attached.
Please pass this information on to anyone who might be interested in this
opportunity to join the SCTI team!
Best regards,
Bob

The Computational Biologist – Species Conservation contributes to the success
of the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) by further developing, maintaining,
providing technical support for, and helping to build capacity in the use of
computer modeling tools that advance risk assessments, conservation planning,
and management for threatened species which contributes to the Society’s
innovations in science, education, research, conservation, and animal welfare.
The Computational Biologist will work as part of the small team of conservation
scientists at the Species Conservation Toolkit Initiative (SCTI) to design,
build, and support software that is used globally by wildlife managers,
researchers, and students. SCTI is a multi-institutional, international
partnership to ensure that the new innovations and tools needed for species
risk assessment, conservation planning, and managing populations are developed,
are globally available, and are used effectively. The initiative leverages
expertise in population biology, computer programming, and species conservation
planning. You may learn more by visiting
