Post-doctoral opportunity: Pan-Canadian biodiversity mapping using eDNA
Employer:
[cid:15f34d79-c0b0-45af-a412-8b07c74736ef@ead.ubc.ca]
Brief Description:
This post-doctoral position will entail managing the integration of multiple
eDNA and other data sets emerging from laboratories at the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans, University of British Columbia, Dalhousie University, and
the Canadian Museum of Nature. This will involve collaboration with taxonomic
experts, bioinformatics and genetics experts, as well as a broad range of
technicians, research scientists and other postdoctoral fellows, providing a
unique environment for professional development in combination with strong
research outputs. The diverse set of tasks in this project will require
pan-Canadian travel, organization of workshops, and demonstrated ability to
collaborate and communicate effectively to a range of scientific and
non-scientific audiences. The primary output will be the publication of the
first pan-Canadian eDNA data set alongside significant opportunities for
collaboration on multiple associated taxon specific publications. In addition
the candidate will assist in optimizing protocols for widespread application of
eDNA-based ecosystem monitoring, and contribute to development of the
pan-Canadian eDNA observation network.
A key aspect of this position will be diverse communication of the findings
including to scientific and non-scientific audiences, local communities and the
public throughout Canada. As such, demonstrated communication skills are
paramount as is the ability to collaborate as part of a team. We expect the
candidate to adopt innovative approaches that incorporate social media, and web
presence, online interactive products, videos, and the development of
infographics and other communications materials for broad-based audiences. The

Post-Doctoral Research Associate: A novel statistical method to identify
predator non-consumptive effects directly from field data
Employer:
Michigan State University
Brief Description:
Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University seeks a
research associate for a quantitative project using and developing novel
state-space models to examine the influence of an invasive predator
(Bythotrephes), global climate change and other factors on zooplankton prey in
the Great Lakes. One focus is to use this method to identify and quantify
non-consumptive effects (NCEs – i.e., due to adaptive anti-predator behavior)
of the predator on the natural abundance and dynamics of animals in the field.
This is important and novel, as whereas there is much experimental evidence
that NCEs influence communities, there is little direct evidence from field
data.
The incumbent will apply novel state-space model approaches (e.g. iterated
filtering) to time series data and compare their utility to other approaches.
Resulting parameters may be used together with individually based models to
examine potential indirect effects and interactive effects of invasive species
to fish recruitment. The postdoc will interact across academic and federal
institutions, and work as part of a team, as the project involves collaboration
between statisticians (Ed Ionides of the Univ. of Michigan, James Bence of
Michigan State Univ.), ecologists (Scott Peacor of MSU and John Marino of
Bradley Univ.) and Great Lakes food web scientists (David Bunnell of the USGS
and Hank Vanderploeg of the NOAA).
Qualifications:
PhD in statistics, ecology, fisheries science or related discipline with a
strong record of research productivity in quantitative methods is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with strong programming skills, and
strong mathematical background.
Salary:
$47,500 per year plus benefits. Initial appointment is for 1 year with
possibility of extensions for subsequent years on an annual basis.
Closing date: Until filled

Assistant Professor and Director, Restoration of Natural Systems Programs
Employer:
University of Victoria
Brief Description:
The interdisciplinary field of ecological restoration investigates the causes,
consequence and remedies for ecosystem degradation. A joint project of the
School of Environmental Studies and the Division of Continuing Studies, the
Restoration of Natural Systems (RNS) program at UVic, since 1996, is a
comprehensive training initiative for restoration practitioners in North
America. The program has evolved to include significant distance education as
well as hands-on field-based learning, and has expanded to include Diploma,
Certificate, and Professional Specialization Certificate opportunities.
Ecological restoration
is also now integrated into the undergraduate and graduate programs in the
School of Environmental Studies. We seek a restoration ecologist who would like
to combine their passion for research and training to continue and enhance the
delivery of the RNS program. The School of Environmental Studies,
http://web.uvic.ca/enweb/, is supported by three overlapping streams of ;
scholarship: political ecology, ethnoecology, and ecological restoration. We
are a relatively small group and depend on close cooperation, mutual respect,
and camaraderie for our flourishing.
The workload for the position is divided between Program Leadership and
Administration (40%), Research (30%), and Teaching (30%), although we
anticipate that initially a larger percentage may be spent on Program
Leadership. The successful applicant will be a tenure-track appointment at the
rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date for this position is
May 1, 2019.

January 11th, 2019

Two Tenure Track Faculty Hires
Employer:
University of North Carolina
Brief Description:
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a
tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level at the Institute
of Marine Sciences (IMS). We seek emerging leaders in the field of
interdisciplinary marine conservation ecology, with particular interest in
candidates that engage fishery systems and communities.
To compliment IMS’s current faculty, areas of desired expertise include, but
are not limited to, quantitative tools/approaches, ecological economics,
response(s) of fisheries and coastal communities to climate change, food-web
interactions in the context of ecosystem-based management, zooplankton
dynamics, and molecular tools (population genetics through environmental
genomics). Expectations include leading vibrant externally funded research
programs, teaching in IMS’s field site program, publishing in peer-reviewed
journals, advising graduate students and resident undergraduates, as well as
engaging stake holders and counseling resource managers. Preference will be
given to applicants whose research portfolio would include field research that
takes advantage of IMS’s location and infrastructure, and interdisciplinary
collaborative research.
