VISITING PROFESSOR FELLOWSHIP IN APPLIED ECOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
LAVRAS, MINAS GERAIS - BRAZIL
The graduate program in Applied Ecology at the University of Lavras, Minas
Gerais – Brazil, is currently seeking applicants for one temporary position for
a foreign visiting professor (or Brazilian professor living abroad) working on
any aspect of Applied Ecology. Ideally, the research area of the successful
candidates will overlap with the research areas of one or more professors in
the Graduate Program
(http://prpg.ufla.br/_ppg/ecologia/en/corpo-docente-e-discente/docentes/).
Candidates must have earned a PhD before 2009 and possess demonstrated
scientific competence compatible with the career stage. The successful
candidate will be able to develop his/her research independently, but in
collaboration with one or more professors associated to the graduate program.
Besides the research assignment, the successful candidate will be required to
occasionally assist in undergraduate and graduate-level teaching as well as in
graduate students advising. Candidates are not required to be proficient in
Portuguese, but the University of Lavras is a Portuguese speaking institution
(Portuguese classes for foreigners are offered regularly).
The graduate program in Applied Ecology at the University of Lavras has a
varied research portfolio ranging from Invasion Ecology, Conservation Biology,
Community Ecology, Theoretical Ecology, Plant Ecology, Stream Ecology, Mammal
Ecology, and Sustainable Development. Our graduate program is formed by a
diverse community of 70 graduate students, 21 professors, and four
post-doctoral fellows. For more information, please visit

Lavras is located in the southern region of Minas Gerais State, and with
its ~100,000 habitants Lavras has one of the top HDI in Brazil. Lavras is
located at the Green Valley and Waterfalls tourist circuit and the
Inconfidentes Trail circuit — a historical region of Minas Gerais. Lavras is
connected by highway to the state capital, Belo Horizonte (237 km), to São
Paulo (379 km) and Rio de Janeiro (423 km). Lavras is in a unique location for
field studies in Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and freshwater.
The visiting professor stipend will depend on the candidate’s qualification
and experience. The period of stay must be no shorter than three and no longer
than 12 months and the successful candidate is expected to start no later than
August 2019, but starting date is flexible. For full details on the position,
