Providing that you have the screen resolutions configured, all you have
to do to switch screen resolutions is press
CTRL+ALT+(the + or the - on the numberpad at right)

Dunno what version of Redhat you have, but try the program switchdesk.
If you don't have that, then:
(if you boot to a text login)
*) rm the file ~/.xinitrc
*) Gut the file ~/.Xclients and add one line that says
"exec gnome-session" (if you don't have that file, create it)
*) Make sure ~/.Xclients is executable
(if you boot to a graphical login and have the GDM login)
*) Select the Gnome session from the Session menu, then log in
(if you boot to a graphical login and have the KDM login)
*) Gut the file /etc/X11/prefdm and put these lines in instead:
#!/bin/sh
PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
. /etc/profile.d/lang.sh
exec /usr/bin/gdm $*
exit 1

You should install Samba, yes.

You don't have to add any protocols to anything; Linux speaks ALL the
network protocols "out of the box". Just go into Linuxconf, configure,
and go.
If you want to get your network connection going right now, you can use
this command, substituting the correct values (of course):
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 111.111.111.111 netmask 111.111.111.111 up
The first IP specified will be your IP.
