She mentioned "NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled" which is generally implemented on Windows systems that connect to the Internet to protect them against some pretty nasty attacks since leaving this open is pretty much like going to the local jail, handing everyone a key to your house and your address and letting them know when you won't be home. You may have read this as choosing NetBIOS rather than TCP/IP and disabling TCP/IP which is not the case. In short, she wants to use TCP/IP, but also wants to protect it from outside attack by choosing this option. But, if she had meant disabling IP and using NetBIOS, I too would be rather amused. Well, actually *wanting* to use Netbios instead of IP is just about the funniest thing I've heard in the last five minutes, but *why* is it that they want it setup that way? I thought that even under windows they no longer had a separate protocol, and that it was all encapsulated with IP anyway. Is that not the case? If not, you're out of luck with Samba - I don't think there's even support for the protocol under linux. Explain to them though that if they use IP, there's this great new thing called "the internet" that they'll be able to use. Once they're on "the internet," they'll forget about this silly netbios thing... John -- John Madden UNIX Systems Engineer Ivy Tech State College jmadden@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
