When you change monitors you also need to tell linux about your new monitor. You need to tell linux the vertical and horizontal refresh rates, 2 different numbers. I've done that before when linux did not have my monitor type in its list of monitor configurations. Anyway, I will search for the command to do that and get back to you if someone else doesn't first. Question: When you turn on your computer does it automatically go into gnome? On mine, when it boot up, I login my user name and password. After that, the screen is blank, all I have is a command prompt, similar to the login prompt you know. Anyway, at that point I type "startx". Linux then starts up "KDE" instead of "gnome", but I could have had it do "gnome" instead, I just preferred "kde". Well if you can get that command prompt, you can tell linux the vertical and horizontal refresh rates of your monitor, it should then be able to launch "gnome" correctly. Get it? Take your time, if all else fails, don't mess with it, after turning off your computer, plug in the old monitor and reboot. It would be better if you could have it set up as mine. The crash I'm sure is because "gnome" OR "kde" requires knowing the monitor types. Hey, FIND OUT THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL refresh rates of your new monitor by looking it up in the manual. Keep those manuals! A simpler way is if your linux(probably does) has a list of all monitors, you just pick yours. more later, sorry about the long email, take your time Robert Carteblancher@xxxxxxx wrote: > I just installed Mandrake 8.2 on my Duron 1000 system and its pretty great > except... > > When I installed it I had my Gateway 19" on it instead of the usual Acer 17". > Today I put the 19" back on its system and the Acer 17" on the Mandrake 8.2. > > When I try to boot, it goes all the way to the log in, right before it > launches Gnome, and then it crashes.
