I've heard preferences of Gnome over KDE because of its configurability.
How is wmaker different?

Check your ~/.xinitrc, that's where it's usually started from. Remove the
line that says "startkde" (at the bottom), and replace it with "wmaker."
That'll be the last window manager you'll ever need. =)
