There are single-floppy Linux router bootdisks you can dump in a machine to turn it into a router. GNOME, KDE or Enlightenment really require a pretty swift machine. Same goes for the multimedia stuff. If you're just going to be using textmode and X with a lightweight window manager(like afterstep) and netscape you can get away with a pretty minimal machine.
