[liblouis-liblouisxml] Harness and doctests files

Hi all,
I have seen a tremendous amount of traffic lately on the harness test files.
I don't understand their purpose and how to use them. Could someone give me
a brief description of what they are and how to use them? Are they of any
value to me running strictly, for now, under Windows? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
