Right now if a user checks the source from svn they have to do ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode to be able to compile. It appears that this is due to the AM_MAINTAINER_MODE macro in configure.ac. If I remove this then a mere ./configure is enough to be able to built the source (including documentation). In the archives of automake they advice against this macro. Is there a reason why we have it?
